ACMA Nominating Committee

In 2018, there will be three Full Member seats and one Associate Member seat open on the ACMA Board. Please review the following information below as it contains information on how to apply for an open seat.

Nominating Committee

Per the ACMA by-laws, a Nominating Committee has been selected to recommend a slate of ACMA Executive Board members for consideration by the membership at the Annual Business Meeting. The 2018 Nominating Committee is comprised of Mike Townsend, Coconino County; Shane Dille, Flagstaff; Nicole Lance, Surprise; and Steven Turner, Casa Grande.

This year, the Nominating Committee is charged with recommending a president elect, two directors and one associate director for staggered two-year terms. The Executive Board members that are scheduled to remain on the board in 2018 to fulfill their terms are: Mike Townsend, 2017 President, Coconino County; Shane Dille, President-Elect, Flagstaff; Justin Clifton, Director, Sedona; Bryant Powell, Director, Apache Junction; Brent Stockwell, Director, Scottsdale and Steven Turner, Associate Director, Casa Grande.

Nomination Process

If you are interested in serving on the Executive Board, please indicate your desire to the Nominating Committee through a letter that explains why you are interested in serving, participation on ACMA and/or ICMA committees. Letters to the committee should be sent to ACMA President Mike Townsend, c/o Emily Webb, Member Services Assistant, 1820 W. Washington St., Phoenix, AZ 85007. Letters of interest may also be e-mailed to Please note that nominees must have Full or Associate ACMA membership status. Letters should be received by ACMA no later than December 1, 2017.

When considering the selection of a slate of proposed officers and directors, the nominating committee shall place the candidate’s desire to serve and demonstrated dedication to the corporation above all other considerations. After establishing this as a primary concern, the nominating committee should ensure that the diverse opinions and concerns of the corporation are well represented. Several additional factors should be considered when making nominations. Included among, these considerations should be representation of all geographic areas and the size of communities represented. In addition, consideration should be given to women, minorities, and assistants.

At least thirty (30) days prior to the election the membership shall be notified of the names of the nominees. The nominating committee shall deliver ballots electronically to all members eligible to vote pursuant to the notification and nomination requirements in this section. Members shall return their ballots to the nominating committee within 14 business days or in the manner designated by the nominating committee. The nominating committee shall be designated as the election committee for the purpose of conducting the election and announcing the vote.

ACMA Next Gen was a Success!

ACMA once again partnered with the Alliance for Innovation earlier this month to hold the 4th Annual Next Generation Leadership Conference in Scottsdale! More than 200 next generation leaders in various positions and from numerous organizations joined for this full day, high-quality, educational and networking opportunity designed for associate members.

ACMA would like to thank City of Palo Alto City Manager Jim Keene for serving as the keynote speaker and to all of our panelists and presenters for their insights! Additionally, ACMA would like to thank the managers and professionals who provided their expertise and time to serve as speed coaches and review resumes.

ACMA Andrews and Esser Scholarships

The Arizona City/County Management Association (ACMA) is accepting applications for two student scholarships that may be of interest to MPA, MPP students and undergraduates in your program.

The two scholarships available are: 1) the Marvin A. Andrews Scholarship & Internship, and 2) the Charles A. Esser Memorial Scholarship. The Andrews Scholarship includes a cash award and a three-month summer internship at an Arizona city, town or county, while the Esser Scholarship provides a one-time cash award to a student who is currently working or pursuing a career in local government. Both scholarships will be awarded at the 2018 ACMA Winter Conference in Sedona, Arizona, on Thursday, February 1.

Scholarship applications will be available the first week of December.

ICMA Annual Conference Recap

My First Experience at ICMA

As the saying goes, “everything is bigger in Texas,” and the 2017 Annual ICMA Conference proved this to be true. With nearly 4,000 public servants descending upon The City of San Antonio, this year’s conference was one of the largest in ICMA history. I would like to thank the ACMA and its entire membership for providing this opportunity to build upon the hands-on experience I received during my summer internship with the Town of Marana and the education I have gained through my undergraduate program at Arizona State University.

Some of my highlights from the 103rd ICMA Annual Conference included a session filled with tangible examples of how the cities of Eugene, Oregon; Boulder, Colorado; and Fort Collins, Colorado are working to alleviate homelessness within their communities. One particularly innovative solution which the City of Eugene shared was their “Opportunity Village,” a tiny-house community which provides safe, temporary shelters for homeless individuals. In the past two years, the Opportunity Village has helped 136 individuals transition into permanent housing and can be credited for facilitating over 600 hours of community service by resident participation. The efforts of the City of Eugene and other innovative municipalities offers hope that reducing homelessness is an obtainable goal.

I was also able to attend educational sessions on topics such as community sustainability strategies, next generation civic engagement, and social media uses within an organization. In addition to the excellent educational sessions, each day began with exceptional keynote speakers who shared heartwarming stories of overcoming adversity, leading amidst uncertainty, and finding what it takes to advance into leadership positions.

Overall, the 103rd ICMA Annual Conference was an immense success and the perfect complement to my time spent in the Town of Marana as a Management Intern. The primary goal of the Marvin Andrews Scholarship is to provide the recipient with professional experience within a city, town, or county. Due to their fantastic reputation for professionalism, innovation, and dedicated service I chose to intern at the Town of Marana. I will be the first to say that their reputation is justly merited. Over the course of the internship, I met with every department and became knowledgeable of the roles and responsibilities of the 350 employees who make Marana exceptional. I was also fortunate enough to work on projects relating to Marana’s asset management software which contains great potential to launch the town into the future. Between the uniquely exciting history and growth of Marana complimented by an accomplished staff, I could not have asked for a better internship experience.

The opportunity to attend the ICMA conference provided a bittersweet conclusion to my year as a Marvin Andrew Scholar and I would like to thank the ACMA for investing in my journey to become a dedicated public servant.

Arizona Local Government Professional Development Survey

Help ACMA enhance its professional development offerings by completing the short Arizona Local Government Professional Development Survey!

The Arizona Local Government Professional Development Survey was created to assess the self-perceived skill of local government professionals in Arizona on the ICMA Practices for Effective Local Government Leadership, as well as levels of job satisfaction and relationships within the profession, and to see if there are differences in ratings based on tenure or demographics.

The information collected will be used to enhance ACMA’s professional development offerings.
