ACMA Summer Conference 2011
This year's summer conference at Loews Ventana Resort Canyon in Tucson, Arizona was a success with 140 attendees. The conference provided guests with valuable, informative, and entertaining sessions on local government. Additionally, the sessions focused on a positive leadership in cities and towns. We would like to thank our sponsors for making the event possible and to our planning committee for organizing the event. We would also like to give a special thanks to the chair of the planning committee, Nicole Dailey.
Personal Renewal: Credentialing
By: Robert Flatley, City Manager, Coolidge, ACMA Board Director

Over thirty years of service in local government, I have had the opportunity to observe various organizational renewal issues. But, as time goes by, I find myself more and more interested in personal renewal. I am bewildered why some professionals go to seed, while others remain full of life as they grow older. The ICMA Code of Ethics makes specific mention that it is a duty that each ICMA member commit to at least 40 hours per year of professional development. Read more
Career Compass No. 19: Why Should Anyone Follow Me?
By: Dr. Frank Benest, ICMA Senior Advisor

In this issue of Career Compass, Dr. Benest helps us understand the importance of trusting ourselves and being confident so that we can lead at every level of the organization.

I'm an early-career program specialist who wants to be a leader in my special district organization. I want to know how I can develop my leadership skills even though I'm not a manager. I know you have said that anyone can lead but why would anyone follow me if I'm not in a "leadership" role? Read more
Innovation Lab: The Value of Public Service
By: Randy Reid, County Manager, Alachua County, Florida

We find ourselves today as public sector leaders working in an era of dynamic global economics, stormy political discourse and facing yet another crisis in confidence in our public institutions. Memories of 9-11 sacrifices of public servants have faded as we debate the causes of our national afflictions, diminished financial security and face the current rhetoric frequently condemning the public sector. That said, I continue to feel an undiminished pride in working as a professional in local government. I know my jurisdiction, like the ones many of you work for, have a brighter economic future and are kinder and gentler places because of the personal investment and labor of public employees. ICMA Milwaukee
The ICMA 2011 Conference in Milwaukee is just a month away, scheduled for September 18-21. This year's conference will address the issues, trends, and challenges that are facing local government managers. The conference will be a great event for Arizona managers to gain knowledge on informative sessions and have a chance to network with other members. At the same time Arizona attendees will have a chance to promote for next year's IMA 2012 Conference in Phoenix. We looked forward to seeing you in Milwaukee!
